Maiji Mountain

Maiji Mountain, located in Maiji District, Tianshui, Gansu Province, is an isolated 142-meter-high peak in the Xiaolongshan Mountains. It got its name because it is shaped like a stack of wheat. The Maiji Mountain Grottoes were first cut between AD 384 and AD 417. Today, there are still 221 grottoes, 10,632 clay sculptures and stone carvings, and more than 1,300 square meters of murals, so Maiji Mountain Grottoes is known as a museum of eastern sculptural art. It is one of China’s four major grottoes and has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List.

The Maiji Mountain Scenic Area includes more than 180 attractions, such as the Maiji Mountain, Xianren Cliff, the Shimen Scenic Zone, Quxi Scenic Zone, and Jieting Hot Spring. It is home to a large variety of biotypes and species. It was known as the “best landscapes in Gansu” with numerous tourism resources. It is a dazzling artistic pearl and the most promising tourist destination on the ancient Silk Road tourist route.

Address:On the south side of Maijishan Township, Maiji District, Tianshui, Gansu Province (50 km southeast of the downtown area)

Transportation:ake bus 34 (which terminates at Maijishan Parking Lot) from Tianshui to Maiji Mountain Scenic Area; the fare is about RMB 6.
