Mingsha Mountain

Mingsha Mountain, or Echoing-Sand Mountain, is located 6 km south of Dunhuang. It got its name due to the mountain echoing to the sound of sand.

Mingsha Mountain, a mountain of quicksand, extends to the top of the Mogao Grottoes in the east and the Danghe Reservoir in the west. It is 40 km from east to west and 20 km from south to north. And its highest point is 1,715 meters above sea level. The whole mountain is built up from piles of red, yellow, green, black, and white grains of sand. The colorful grains of sand are fine, soft, smooth, and round. They roll down as you walk along and will be restored to their original state after being blown by the night wind. The mountain is beautifully shaped, and its peaks are like blades. Seen from afar, it rolls and winds like a meandering dragon. When there is friction and vibration, the grains of sand produce a sound that can be melodious or thunderous. Therefore, “sand dunes singing on clear days” is one of the “eight most famous attractions” in Dunhuang.

The desert seldom coexists with the spring. In Mingsha Mountain, however, you can see the desert and the spring side by side. The Yueya Spring, or Crescent Spring, surrounded by Mingsha Mountain, is the most famous place in the Mingsha Mountain Scenic Area. It is about 150 m in length and 50 m in width. It is also shaped like a crescent moon, hence its name. Mingsha Mountain is full of colors and vitality. It is like a reed pipe tune of the south of the Yangtze River amid the Qiang flute music of the desert, melodious, happy, and lively.
