The World's Longest Sea-Crossing Bridge — Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
Published: March 27, 2026
Editor: Ruoxi

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge spans a total length of 55 kilometers, making it the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world. Officially opened to traffic in October 2018, it connects Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao, reducing the journey from Zhuhai to Hong Kong from several hours to about 40 minutes.

Visiting the Bridge

1. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Sea Tour

The "Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Sea Tour" is a 100-minute cruise. Departing from Jiuzhou Port, the route passes the Zhuhai-Macao Port artificial island of the bridge, the "sail-shaped" twin towers, and offers close-up views of the bridge's magnificent structure, including passing beneath it. Visitors can also take in distant views of Macao's urban skyline, see the Jiang-Hai Direct Navigation Channel Bridge with its "dolphin towers," and view the West Artificial Island from afar. The tour continues past the Zhuhai Opera House, Lovers' Road coastline, and Jiuzhou Island before returning to Jiuzhou Port

This route allows visitors to experience the bridge from multiple angles at close range, including passing beneath it. The boat also pauses on the sea for an extended period, making it convenient for photos and group pictures, with live performances featured during the journey.

2. Viewing the Bridge from the Air

The aerial sightseeing program is located at Riyuebei Huafa Haiyun City Xintiandi in Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai (Guangdong Kelong Flight Base). Visitors can take a helicopter tour to enjoy aerial views of Zhuhai's scenic coastline along Lovers' Road and capture from above iconic sights such as Riyuebei, Zhuhai Fisher Girl, City Balcony, and Xianglu Bay. Currently, four fixed routes are available, varying by flight path and duration.

3. Viewing from Coastal Walkways

Locations such as Lovers' Road, Seaside Swimming Area, and Zhuhai Fisher Girl offer free vantage points to take in panoramic views of the bridge. At dusk, the combination of the sunset and the bridge creates especially photogenic scenes.

Important Note: Visits to Blue Dolphin Island (East Artificial Island) are currently open only to mainland residents and Hong Kong and Macao residents who have already entered the mainland. Visitors entering with foreign passports are not yet permitted to join island tours.

Technical Highlights

1. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge revolutionized traditional labor-intensive offshore construction by pioneering a large-scale industrialized building model. Approximately 95% of the work was completed in factories, with only installation and the remaining 5% carried out on-site, significantly reducing offshore construction time and safety risks.

2. It is the world's first integrated bridge-island-tunnel system (total length 55 km, including a 6.7 km subsea immersed tube tunnel, two artificial islands, and 22.9 km of bridges), ensuring that sea, land, and air traffic operate without interference.

Ecological Protection

The bridge passes through a national nature reserve for the Chinese white dolphin. Measures such as environmentally friendly dredging, artificial reefs, and dolphin protection initiatives were adopted. Heavy construction activities like piling were suspended during the dolphins' breeding season. The span of non-navigational bridge openings was increased from 70 meters to 110 meters to widen biological corridors. The number of offshore construction vessels was controlled to reduce collision risks, and the overall water-blocking rate was kept below 10% to maintain marine ecological balance.
