Changbai Mountains — Enjoy a Cool Summer in the Nature's "Air-Conditioned Room"
Published: August 21, 2026
Editor: Yuetong Qingyu

Located in the southeastern part of Jilin Province, along the golden latitude of 42°N, the Changbai Mountains Scenic Area enjoys a cool summer, with temperatures averaging 22°C, thanks to its lush forests and high-altitude ecology. The mountains derive their name from the white pumice stones and perennial snow that blanket their main peak, earning them the poetic reputation: "A thousand years of snow, ten thousand years of pines — the first peak under heaven." Beyond their stunning scenery, the Changbai Mountains are a realm of sacred peaks, holy waters, wondrous forests, and legendary fruits, making them a renowned tourist destination.

Top Attractions

Changbai Mountains Tianchi

Changbai Mountains Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) is the deepest lake in China and the world's highest crater lake, formed by water accumulating in the crater after a volcanic eruption. In summer, the lake appears as a tranquil sapphire, shimmering in pristine blue, cradled among the surrounding peaks. Drifting clouds and mist envelop the mountains, while cool breezes sweep across the lake, dispelling every trace of summer heat.

Changbai Waterfall

Water overflows from the northern side of Tianchi, surging through the Chengcha River before cascading dramatically from a height of 68 meters — creating the magnificent Changbai Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Northeast China. At the mouth of the fall, a massive rock known as "Niulang Ferry" splits the torrent into two streams, plunging into the valley below and sending spray several meters into the air — a truly awe-inspiring spectacle.

Julong Volcanic Hot Springs

Rich in sodium, hydrogen, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals, the Julong Volcanic Hot Springs are known for their therapeutic effects on skin conditions, arthritis, and rheumatism.
