As a national landmark, the Three Gorges Dam is both a world-renowned hydraulic engineering achievement and a symbol of China's ingenuity and resolve.
The Three Gorges Dam Tourist Area is in Sandouping town, Yiling district, Yichang city, Hubei province. It includes Tanziling Park, 185 Platform Park, the River Closure Memorial Park, the Three Gorges Project Museum and the World Famous Dams Miniature Park.
In spring, visitors can climb to a vantage point for a panoramic view of the dam, explore the River Closure Memorial Park to connect with its history, delve into the construction story at the Three Gorges Project Museum, and survey global hydraulic landmarks at the World Famous Dams Miniature Park — experiencing the majesty of engineering alongside the season's renewed vitality.
Tanziling Park
Tanziling Park is the highest point in the Three Gorges Dam area, at an elevation of 262.48 meters. In spring, visitors ascend stone steps lined with vibrant winter jasmine. From the summit, the full majesty of the Three Gorges Project is revealed. The park displays key artifacts—the River Closure Stone, the dam-site Foundation Stone, and the Ten-Thousand-Year Riverbed Stone—each carrying the Yangtze River's historical memory. Visitors can trace the river's transformations and feel the fusion of history and nature.
185 Platform Park
Named for sharing the same elevation as the dam crest, 185 Platform Park offers close-up views of the dam's grandeur and distant vistas toward the new county seat of Zigui, the hometown of the ancient poet Qu Yuan—where engineering achievement and cultural heritage meet.
River Closure Memorial Park
The River Closure Memorial Park records the historic river closure milestone of the Three Gorges Project. Here visitors can enjoy one of the finest panoramic views of the dam, inspect preserved construction sites and large-scale machinery, and view sculptural installations of key components. In spring, wide swaths of Chinese violet cress form a purple sea, lending a gentle, romantic contrast to the industrial heritage.
Three Gorges Project Museum
The Three Gorges Project Museum is the world's largest museum dedicated to hydropower engineering, with exhibition halls including the Three Gorges Hall, the Engineering Hall, and the Hydropower Hall. It is the core site of the National Patriotism Education Demonstration Base for the Three Gorges Project, a key water resources education base under the Ministry of Water Resources, and a primary destination for study tours about the dam. The museum comprehensively showcases the project's technological achievements, giving visitors a deeper understanding of the development and significance of hydropower engineering.
World Famous Dams Miniature Park
Covering more than 90,000 square meters, the Miniature Park concentrates 14 of the world's most representative dams in a single garden. As visitors stroll the park, they enter a "miniature kingdom" of global hydropower projects, where they can appreciate different architectural styles, technical features, and the distinct appeal of each structure.
