Yumen Pass

Yumen Pass is also known as Lesser Fangpan Castle and is located in the Gobi Desert 90 kilometers to the Northwest of Dunhuang. It was built around 111 BC as a strategic northern pass heading west along the Silk Road. The pass is square and comprised of a wall in good condition that has 10-meter tall ramparts that are three meters wide at the top and five meters wide below. It stretches from east to west for 24 meters and 26.4 meters from south to north, with a gate on the west and northern sides.

On June 22, 2014, the 38th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was held in Qatar and Yumen Pass was successfully put up for application for World Heritage Status by China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as a site along the "Silk Road: Chang'an-Tian Shan Corridor Road Network".
