Simatai Section of the Great Wall

The Simatai section of the Great Wall is the only section that preserves the original appearance of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall in China. The entire section is ingeniously designed with a variety of novel form of constructions. There are walls of the regular and “one-side” form as well as different kinds of paths such as gentle slopes and long and steep stairways.

Simatai Reservoir separates this section of the Great Wall into two parts, the eastern and western section, which are both magnificent. There are 16 watchtowers in the eastern section and 18 in the west. The various forms of watchtowers are serried with just 140 meters interspaces between one another. Among all watchtowers, the Xiannv Tower and the Wangjing Tower on the eastern peak are two of the most conspicuous ones. The Wangjing Tower is constructed at an altitude of 1,000 meters on a craggy summit and overlooks an outstanding and distant view of Beijing city from the tower top.

The Simatai section of the Great Wall was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is also a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Chinese National Level.
