Laosicheng Tusi Site

The Laosicheng Tusi Site is located on the banks of the Lingxi River to the east of Yongshun Country. It is an ancient site where local Tusi (a tribal leader) ruled on behalf of the government and was the center of political, economic, cultural and military power for ethnic minorities in the southwest of China. It is the largest, best preserved and oldest known ancient Tusi site in China.

In 2001, the Laosicheng Tusi Site was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, in 2011 it was named as one of the country’s Top 10 Archeological Discoveries 2010, in 2012 it was recognized as a Chinese World Cultural Heritage Site, in 2013 it was submitted as a 2015 World Heritage Site, in 2014 it was successfully submitted for the ICOMOS on-site expert assessment, and on July 3, 2015, it was announced that submission had been approved at the 39th Session of the World Heritage Committee and was recognized as a World Heritage Site, the first one in Hunan.
