The Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom are located in Jilin's Ji'an City and incorporate Guonei (Gungnae) City, Wandu Mountain City, imperial tombs (14 ones) and tombs of the nobility (26 ones), and are marked as a series of capitals that link the plains with the mountains. Of the tombs, the Taiwang Maosoluem, General's Grave and Qianqiu Tomb are the largest in size. In total there are over 10,000 tombs dating from the Koguryo era here that make up this famous ancient complex of caves and gullies.

The General's Grave is a masterpiece of Koguryo era masonry art, with a single large slab of stone adapted for the grave's ceiling, magnificent architecture and a grand design. Within the ancient tomb complex many of the original colors inside the tombs are preserved to this day, with murals of fluid lines and rich content depicting myth and legend along the walls.
