Ji'nan, the capital of Shandong Province, is one of 15 cities at sub-provincial level. It serves as Shandong's center of politics, culture and education, as well as being the southern hub of the Bohai Economic Rim. An abundance of natural springs win Ji'nan the title of "Spring City". It is honored as a National Famous Historical and Cultural City and was among the first batch of China Excellent Tourism Cities. Prehistoric Longshan culture also began here.
A number of global and national events are held here: the Asian Cup, National Games of the PRC, International Garden and Flower Expo and the China Art Festival. Moreover, the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences was held in Jinan in 2015, marking its first appearance in Asia after being founded over 100 years ago.
