Sichuan, officially abbreviated to "Chuan" or "Shu" in Chinese, is located in the hinterland of Southwest China and in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Lying to its west is the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and to its east is the Sichuan Basin. The tremendous changes caused by geological movements over hundreds of millions of years have created the wonderful and precipitous landscape of Sichuan.
